Bottom-side amicus briefs in Williams

Today was the due date for amicus briefs supporting the state in Williams v. Illinois. Four have been filed.

You can read the brief of the United States by clicking here.

You can read the brief of 42 states, the District of Columbia, and Guam, all under the leadership of Ohio, by clicking here.

You can read the brief of the National District Attorneys Association by clicking here.

You can read the brief of the New York County District Attorney and the New york City Chief Medical Examiner by clicking here, and the appendix to that brief by clicking here.

I'm not sure why the links have been bad, but they all should be good now, and there are links to all four bottom-side amicus briefs. Sorry about the glitches!

"Forensic DNA analysis brings extraordinary accuracy
to identification of the guilty and exoneration of the
innocent"
this quote from the NY County DA's brief is not quite accurate - it should have been, "When proper protocols are followed forensic DNA analysis brings extraordinary accuracy to identification of the guilty and exoneration of the
innocent" - and therein is the reason there should be an "all tecs" rule. How else to determine that the procedures which are required were done carefully?

But the NY County DA "has a long tradition of excellence . . . and has long been considered on of the nation's preeminent prosecutor's offics" so how can it be wrong?

Prof-

A basic question- what exactly is a "top-side" and "bottom-side" amicus brief? I assume they just refer to the timing of when the amicus brief is filed, e.g., before or after the named parties file their briefs &/or petitions?

[two maxims I tend to agree with: 1) do't assume, and 2) don't be afraid to ask a 'silly' question.]

With reference to what is a top-side amicus brief and what is a bottom-side amicus brief: "Top-side" refers to an amicus brief written in support of the petitioner, which must be filed within seven days of the petitioner's opening brief on the merits. "Bottom-side" refers to an amicus brief in support of respondent (also due within seven days of respondent's brief on the merits.
